Hollister Police Chief Jeff Miller responded to the rally promoter’s comparison of event policing to expensive cancer treatment by saying he didn’t like the analogy, but that “the concept is right” because the city is at the mercy of outside agencies’ costs.

Seth Doulton, owner of Horse Power Promotions, this week showed frustration toward rally policing costs and made the comparison by asserting “they can charge whatever they want for chemotherapy” in regard to security. Those costs have risen in recent years and came to about $360,000 in 2008, while the promoter’s interview this week shed light on growing doubts about the event’s sanctioned future.

“In some regards,” the police chief responded, “the concept is right as it applies to our hiring other officers. These other agencies charge what they’re going to charge, and we have no control of that.”

Miller noted how the costs would be much lower if “people would come for $20 an hour.” It would be “great” if Hollister could recruit more officers within commuting range as well, Miller said, since the city has to pick up lodging bills, too.

“The reality is, we don’t have that option,” he said.
