– American Legion Post 69 is hosting Pearl Harbor Remembrance
Day on Sunday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Veteran’s
Memorial Building, 649 San Benito Street. Tri-tip meals will be
served throughout the day for $7 adults and $4 for a children’s
plate. The meals include tri-tip, chili beans,
salad and garlic bread. Take out is available and tickets are
available at the door or by calling Robert at 673-7113, Rich at
636-7410 or Dolly at 637-1980.
Help feed the neighbors

HOLLISTER – Several Hollister businesses are making it easy to support Community Pantry’s holiday food drive this year.

Food drops are open for donations at Bianchi, Kasavan and Pope at Sixth and San Benito streets; CitiFinancial at 501 San Benito Street; DMB El Rancho San Benito at 615 San Benito Street; the county administration building at 481 Fourth St.; the county Chamber of Commerce at 650 San Benito Street; and the YMCA at 359 Fifth Street.

Give a pet a home

HOLLISTER – A pet adoption fair is set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Pet Friends shelter, 2975 Buena Vista Road.

Homeless cats and dogs will be available for adoption.

Tutors needed

HOLLISTER – Even though there are 30 volunteer tutors working at the San Benito County Library, more are needed.

A waiting list for literacy tutoring has grown to 14. For further information, call Diane Leverich, literacy coordinator, at 636-4107.

Scout for food

HOLLISTER – Scouts of Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counites will participate in the annual “Scouting for Food Drive” by going house to house to collect food Saturday, Nov. 15. The donations will go to Community Pantry of San Benito County, Second Harvest Food Bank and the Food Bank of Monterey County. Door hangers will be delievered this week to remind people of the food drive.

Vendor and craft boutique

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – Bear Flag Gallery Mall at 207 Third Street in San Juan Bautista will hold a vendor and craft boutique on Sunday, Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 623-4285.

Young Republican club starts up

HOLLISTER – Join the San Benito County Young Republican Federation members Nov. 20 from 7 p.m. to 8:20 p.m. at 455 San Benito St., Ste. 30 in Hollister. The new club is open to people between the ages of 18 and 40, though others are welcome to participate.

South county highway construction continues

PINNACLES – Caltrans staff are working to realign a curve on Hwy. 25 north of the Hwy. 25/146 separation near the Pinnacles National Monument. The project began in late October and will require one-way traffic control through the area Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Motorists can expect a delay of approximately 10 min.

The contractor for the $460,500 project is Granite Construction of Watsonville. It is expected to be completed in February 2009.

Norcal holiday schedule

SAN BENITO – Norcal Waste Systems of San Benito County has announced this year’s holiday collection schedule. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day all fall on Thursday this year. If your collection day is on Thursday or Friday your service will occur one day later; Thursday collections will be Friday, Friday collections will be Saturday.

According to Phil Couchee, General Norcal Waste General Manager “Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day are the only holiday’s where your service is interrupted. It is not as disruptive when Christmas and New Year’s Day are later in the week because not as many customers are affected.”

Boy Scout alumni event

HOLLISTER – Current and alumni members of Hollister Boy Scout Troop 436 are encouraged to apply for the Gerald Rawn Memorial Endowment Fund $1,000 Scholarship. Applications can be downloaded at www.rawn.org and must be received by Dec. 1.

Retired teachers’ meeting

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County chapter of California Retired Teachers will holds its next meeting at Paine’s Restaurant on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 10:30 a.m. Following the meeting, members will be served turkey with all the trimmings. Members are asked to bring canned goods for donation to Community Pantry.

Breakfast with Santa

HOLLISTER – Santa and Mrs. Claus will be at the Sacred Heart School gym on Saturday, Dec. 6 as the school’s graduating Class of 2009 hosts Breakfast with Santa from 8 a.m. to noon. Sausage and eggs will be served with coffee and juice for kids of all ages. Adult tickets are $6 and children 10 and under are $4. Elves will be on hand to read stories and ZOOM Photo will take pictures of children with Santa for $10 between 8:30 and 11 a.m. Tickets for the event are available at McAbee Feed, Nino Real Estate and ZOOM Photo. All proceeds benefit the Class of 2009’s legacy gift to the school.
