“Nutcracker” performances over the weekend

The San Benito Dance Academy will be performing the full-length “Nutcracker” at the Gavilan College Theater Saturday, Dec. 20 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 21 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $15, and a lap pass is available for children under 3 years old.

The lead of Clara will be rotated among four girls, including Ashley Slavich, Maggie Campo, Haleigh Dalke and Beatrice White. John Rachuy will play the role of Herr Drosselmeyer, the Godfather who gices Clara a magical nutcracker for Christmas.

The dance academy has guest performers from the Ballet San Jose dancing in the shows. Saturday Marai Noda and Maykel Solas will perform, and Sunday Maria Jacobs and Ramon Moreno will peform.

It is the first year San Benito Dance Academy will be putting on the ballet, and they held an open audition that required no previous experience. Members of the academy have had to choreograph the ballet and make or buy more than 250 costumes. The backstage crew also created the sets and backdrops for the performance.
