Polo player seclected for All-Star game
With every intention of playing in college, San Benito senior Jordan Schafer is certainly compiling an impressive resume.
Schafer, the leading scorer for the Haybalers boys’ water polo team this season, was selected to the all-Central Coast Section second team for Division I last week, and will play in this Saturday’s Pacific CCS All-Star Game at Monta Vista High in Cupertino as a result.
Schafer is the first Haybaler to receive the honor since David Smith was named to the elite section squad two years ago, and he joins Salinas’ Eric Zahnlecker as the only two polo players from the Tri-County Athletic League to make it this year.
“Obviously, Jordan is very passionate about water polo, knows the game extremely well and has a lot to offer the CCS team,” San Benito High coach Tom Agan said. “I was pleased to hear he was selected second team all-CCS, and he’ll do a good up there. He’ll represent our league well.”
Schafer was shocked at his all-CCS inclusion after he was awarded a second team selection in the TCAL this year.
“I didn’t think I had a chance,” Schafer said. “I was just really surprised.”
San Benito – which finished with a 6-1 record in the TCAL but went 0-2 in the year-end tournament – only received one first team selection due to their fourth-place finish, and league coaches voted keeper Kyle Reuther first team.
“It was pretty important, too,” Schafer added. “It gave me a little more confidence. I know I want to keep on playing at the next level, so it was pretty important.”
Schafer, a two-time team captain and three-year varsity letterman, scored 87 goals this year, and added six blocks and 48 assists. For his high school career, he had 232 goals, seven blocks and 105 assists.
During the summer months down in Huntington Beach, Schafer competed in the Junior Olympics with Valley Splash, an all-star club team that included the top players from Salinas, Valley Christian and Schafer’s Morgan Hill team.
He played in a national tournament, and coupled with his 3.67 GPA, Schafer was named academic all-American. He currently boasts a 3.8 GPA.
Schafer, who is one of only 25 water polo players selected from Division I, will compete on Saturday at Monta Vista High in Cupertino for the section’s all-star game. Match time is 11 a.m.
Said Agan, “It’s very much an honor.”
