Any momentum the San Benito boys soccer team had obtained from the scare it put into Alisal on Friday was wiped away Monday, as the Haybalers fell down early and never mounted a threat in a 3-0 loss to Salinas.
“They scored a goal in the first minute and from that moment on, they controlled the first half,” said coach Juan Carlos Martinez, whose team challenged then-first place Alisal before allowing a last minute goal in a 2-1 loss.
“It’s disappointing because I talked to the team before the game and said ‘Don’t get confident,'” Martinez said. “It seems these guys only want to play good against certain tough teams.”
In addition to its close encounter with Alisal, the ‘Balers (2-8-2, 1-4-1) also fought hard against Gilroy while battling to a 1-1 draw. The Mustangs took over first place in the Tri-County Athletic League on Monday when they beat Alisal 1-0 to improve to 3-0-3. The Trojans fell to 3-1-2.
Salinas (87-2-6, 3-1-2) applied the pressure from the beginning, scoring the early goal and continuing to pressure while adding a second first-half tally.
The Cowboys didn’t let down in the second half, scoring another goal to put away San Benito.
“They were applying a lot of pressure. We didn’t get a lot of shots,” Martinez said. “We had a few plays that we could’ve scored, but we didn’t. Hopefully we don’t play like that against Palma.”
The ‘Balers continue TCAL action with a 3:30pm contest Wednesday against the Chieftains at Salinas Sports Complex.
