San Benito County’s long list of boards, committees and commissions has a few holes in it, and the office of the clerk of the Board of Supervisors is looking for civic-minded volunteers.
In all, there are 31 county panels that cover the gamut of local issues.
“There are a lot of them,” said Linda Churchill, clerk of the board. “Some meet on a regular basis, like once a month, but a lot of them don’t meet that often.”
The boards impanel members through a variety of processes, and their composition runs from traditional panels of five, seven or nine members to larger groups, such as the county Grand Jury. Grand jurors land their posts by judicial appointment. Planning commissioners are appointed by members of the Board of Supervisors. But many of the panels depend on volunteers who show an interest.
With that many boards and commissions in a county with a relatively modest population, vacancies are a constant challenge, according to Churchill.
And just how many vacancies are lingering out there? “I couldn’t tell you offhand, but there are a number of vacancies on several of them,” Churchill said.
The panels are not proliferating with the arrival of a relatively new Board of Supervisors. Most have long histories.
“I’ve been here 15 years and most of these boards have been active for that long,” Churchill said.
People who wish to know more about serving on local boards and commissions should call the clerk of the board’s office at 636-4000, or drop by the county administration building at the corner of Fourth and West streets in Hollister.
