Hospital offers scholarships

HOLLISTER – Applications for the 2006 Hazel Hawkins Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Awards are now available. Each year the Auxiliary awards scholarships to students who are pursuing a medical or medically oriented career. The total amount awarded to each recipient will be at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.

Auxiliary members put in thousands of hours throughout the year running a thrift shop, the hospital gift shop, and organizing their annual craft and antique faire in order to fund scholarships and purchase equipment for Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital.

To be eligible to apply for a scholarship students must:

– Be a high school graduate (or equivalent)

– Be a resident of San Benito County for a minimum of one continuous year

– Be enrolled in health-related course of study at an accredited institution.

– Apply by April 13 2007

A complete list of eligibility rules and application packet are available at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital Lobby, Hazel Hawkins Community Health Clinic on Sunset Drive and Hazel Hawkins Community Health Clinic in San Juan Bautista, San Benito High School, Gavilan College or prospective applicants can contact Frankie Valent-Arballo in the hospital district’s public relations office at 636-2644 for additional information.

Toilet pick-up

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Water District is again offering free toilets for water customers of the City of Hollister, Sunnyslope County Water District and the City of San Juan Bautista who would like to replace a toilet that is from before 1992. Toilets can be picked up Sat. Feb. 10 at the SBC water district office at 30 Mansfield Rd., in Hollister.

Tax prep for seniors

HOLLISTER – The American Association of Retired Persons Tax-Aide Program offers free personal tax counseling and preparation to all taxpayers who are middle and low-income, especially to those 60 and older. Feb 8 through April 12, staff members will be at the Community Center, 300 West St. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. to help. Appointments are required and attendees should bring the tax package they received in the mail, last year’s return and all relevant information on income and expenses.

AG Against Hunger receives grant

CASTROVILLE – AG Against Hunger has received a $20,000 matching grant from the Harden Foundation to support its general operations. This donation will allow Ag Against Hunger to keep its cooler open throughout the winter and provides funds needed to provide a consistent supply of fresh, nutritious produce to local people in need throughout the rest of the year.
