Hawks defeat Padres, get read for showdown with Santa

San Juan Bautista – After snapping a three-game losing streak with its win Friday, the Anzar girls soccer team made it two in a row with a resounding 7-1 win over Carmel on Monday.

The Hawks got a goal in the first minute from Alex Brown to immediately take control of the game. Leah Jimenez scored the first of her four goals in the fourth minute and Brown and Jimenez each had two goals by halftime to take a 4-0 lead.

Olivia Austin added a late goal and Michelle Chatley and Sarah Chatley each had an assist, as did Brown.

The Padres only goal came on a shot that was lost in the sun by Anzar’s goalkeeper.

“Every one of my players was terrific today. This is exactly the energy we need going into Catalina on Wednesday,” coach Deric McLean said of the team’s upcoming matchup with the first-place Cougars in the regular-season finale. “We are definitely a momentum team.”

Jimenez’s four goals boosted her season total to 18, tying her for the Mission Trail Athletic League lead. Brown, who was seeing her first full game at the forward position, responding with an outstanding day that featured 12 shots and the two goals and an assist.
