Gilroy – Gavilan took out its aggressiveness on the basepaths Tuesday and raced to an 8-0 win over Monterey Peninsula College in the teams’ Coast Conference opener.

The game was scheduled for MPC but because the field was unplayable, it was switched to Gavilan.

Jen McBain allowed just one hit, a second-inning single by Amanda Algoro, struck out three and walked two in the game called because of the eight-run rule after five innings.

“Our baserunning was very aggressive,” Gavilan coach Nikki Dequin-Thompson said. “We’re focusing on quality at-bats. There’s room for improvement but we’re starting to come around with our hitting.”

The Rams (5-4 overall) got the only run they needed in the second inning. McBain was safe on an error, and raced to third on Amanda Perez’s base hit. Perez stole second and McBain scored on Amanda Jackson’s fielder’s choice grounder.

A two-run third inning again began with an error as Amanda Roseveer was safe on a miscue. Hayli Cloud doubled to center, and McBain and Perez followed with RBI singles.

Gavilan broke it open with four runs in the fourth. Melissa Gaxiola walked and Megan Smart was safe on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt with Gaxiola racing to third. Smart stole second and scored behind Gaxiola on Rosaveer’s two-run single. Cloud singled and McBain walked to load the bases. Jackson’s single delivered two more runs.

The Rams got their final run in the fifth. Gaxiola walked, stole second, moved to third on Smart’s bunt single and scored on Roseveer’s sacrifice fly.

“It was great to get a win in our first conference game,” Dequin-Thompson said. “It gives the girls a lot of confidence. I really believe we will do well in league this year.”

Gavilan has its second conference game at 3pm Thursday when it travels to Cabrillo.
