Sarsfield Lands Job at Inspector General’s Office

Sacramento – Former San Benito County District Attorney John Sarsfield has taken a job with the state Inspector General’s Office.

Sarsfield, 44, will serve as a special assistant inspector general. The former prosecutor will work with the Bureau of Independent Review in the Inspector General’s Office. The bureau is responsible for oversight of internal affairs investigations conducted by the California Department of Corrections.

He was appointed to the position by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The appointment did not require Senate confirmation.

Sarsfield said he accepted the position on Tuesday, but declined to comment further.

In accepting the position, Sarsfield took a small pay cut. As San Benito County District Attorney, he was paid $120,084 a year. In his new position as special assistant inspector general, he will make $114,276 annually.

Sarsfield served as district attorney from 2003 to 2007. He lost a re-election bid to District Attorney Candice Hooper in June 2006 by a wide margin following a tumultuous tenure as the county’s top prosecutor.

Summer Study Abroad Program Offered at Gavilan

Hollister – Sitting in a classroom, learning the many ways to conjugate the verb “hablar” in Spanish is one thing; traveling to a historic city in Spain and learning firsthand how to speak with locals is quite another.

Gavilan College is offering a summer program studying in Seville, Spain. The program costs about $1,500 and airfare is not included, but students will get the opportunity to stay with a Spanish host family and learn firsthand about the language. Students can early up to five units of college credit for the program, which lasts from June 3 through June 30.

For students interested in attending, an orientation meeting is being held at 9:30am Feb. 24 on the Gavilan campus in Gilroy in Room 105 of the Humanities building.
