“It just proved how important he was to our team,” Hawks coach Ed Cecena said of Adrian Monroy, who was home with a 103-degree fever.
“We just totally fell apart without anybody to take control of the game,” Cecena added.
Anzar battled the Breakers to overtime in their first meeting before falling 56-47. This time, it was never a contest.
Chris Hardee controlled much of the game for Pacific Grove (17-6, 13-0 Mission Trail Athletic League). The 6-foot-5, 240-pound center scored 20 points and dominated the interior.
“He was a big factor in the game,” Cecena said. “He rebounded really well and scored inside at will.”
Scott Benson paced Anzar (15-10, 7-6) with 12 points and Stephen Mockabee contributed 10 for the Hawks, who wrap up league play at Carmel at 7pm Wednesday looking to gain some momentum entering the playoffs.
“That’s the thinking,” Cecena said. “Let’s get a good game under our belts and do all the little things right.”
