Our first Red Phone call of the week came from a Hollister man who asked the Crimson Crusader what could be done about a local gas station he believed was overcharging him at the pump. Our caller said the filling station overcharged him by several cents on each gallon of gas.
The Crimson Crusader has handled several of these cases before. If you believe the gas station is committing fraud, you should contact the Hollister Police Department at 831-636-4330. However, if you believe the gas station is not running an ethical, moral or fair business, then you should contact the Better Business Bureau of Silicon Valley at 408-278-7400.
Slave to the Light
Our next Red Phone caller, a Hollister woman, asked the Crimson Crusader to find out why and how long Caltrans crews would be working on the traffic light at the intersection of San Benito Street and Fourth Street in Hollister. The light at the intersection had not been working all day and our dear caller urged the Crimson Crusader to find out why.
Our hero called Caltrans public information officer Donna Carter to get some answers. Carter said Pacific Gas and Electric had damaged the electrical line connected to the traffic light in October of 2006 while digging for a gas line and was making repairs on Friday. She said the light should be fixed before the weekend. The traffic light had been operating properly, but the electrical line and the traffic detectors need some repairs. Although the light will be back to normal today, Carter said work crews would be returning to the site soon to do some additional repaving. She did not know exactly when the crews would return.

Our final Red Phone matter of the week, an unsigned letter delivered by the Post Service, asked the Crimson Crusader to keep readers informed about special events such as the recent free San Benito County resident admission days (Feb. 24 and 25) at the Steinbeck Center Museum in Salinas. Our friendly letter writer apparently didn’t see the Jan. 31 edition of the Free Lance, which contained an article about this event.
That being said, the Crimson Crusader will continue to make sure events like this not only appear in the news section of the paper, but also in the Community Bulletin for several days before the event. It should also be noted here that our letter writer enjoyed the museum and would recommend it. Our hero appreciates the recommendation.
