award, losing out to Pacific Grove’s Chris Hardee.
Anzar leading scorer Scott Benson was the runner-up in the voting for the Mission Trail Athletic League boys basketball MVP award, losing out to Pacific Grove’s Chris Hardee.
Benson finished the season second in the area in scoring at 24.8 points per game, trailing only Palma’s Orlando Johnson (25.3).
But Hardee, who poured in 15.7 points per game to lead the Breakers, helped his team to a 14-0 league record and the MTAL title.
Pacific Grove fell to Menlo in the semifinals of the Central Coast Section Division IV playoffs, while the Hawks were knocked out in the semis of the Division V playoffs.
Benson, a 6-foot-2 senior forward, did earn a selection to the All-MTAL first-team and was joined by 6-4 junior center Erik Olson, who averaged just under 10 points per game for third-place Anzar. Senior point guard Adrian Monroy was an honorable mention selection.
Other first-team honorees included Carmel’s Alex Pickert, Gonzales’ Juan Adame, King City’s Aaron Gomez, Pacific Grove’s Kyle Neely, Stevenson’s Keith Johnson and Cooper Kehoe, Soledad’s Anthony Jasso and Frankie Vasquez. Gomez was also selected as the Defensive Player of the Year.
Pacific Grove’s Dan Powers was named the league’s Coach of the Year.
