Hollister – The San Benito boys tennis team is gaining some confidence and it’s showing.
After losing to Monte Vista Christian in their first go-around this season, the Haybalers rebounded Thursday with a 6-1 win at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.
“The boys have been playing well and jelling as a team,” coach Leanna Morgan said. “The guys are really excited that they did well against Monte Vista Christian, especially after losing 5-2 last time.”
San Benito swept the singles matches and its only loss came at No. 1 doubles.
Derek Panger continued his solid play at No. 3 singles, earning a 6-3, 6-1 win to improve on his team-best record.
“He has just showed himself to be a very steady player,” Morgan said of the sophomore Panger. “I call him a quiet competitor. He gets out there and works hard.”
Sophomore twin brothers Danny and Michael Coffey were strong at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. Danny earned a 7-5, 6-1 win and Michael easily won 6-0, 6-0.
“They’re developing more confidence,” Morgan said of her top two players.
Mark Tobias was extended before earning a 6-1, 2-6, 10-4 victory at No. 4 singles.
D.J. Nielsen and Jon Rudolfs won in straight sets at No. 2 doubles, as did Austin Pan and Michael Labugnen at No. 3 doubles. The four newcomers to the team have fit in quite nicely this season for Morgan.
“They’ve come together as doubles teams and are definitely out there to win,” Morgan said.
Alan Guttirez and Connor Bray dropped their match at No. 1 doubles, but have played important roles this season.
“The hardest position to play is No. 1 doubles,” Morgan said. “They have bounced back between singles and doubles and have just been really versatile for us.”
San Benito returns to the court when it hosts Seaside at 3:30pm Thursday.
