Gleaning program needs volunteers
SALINAS
– Ag Against Hunger is looking for volunteers to get involved in
a gleaning program Saturday, April 28. Working with local growers,
volunteers help collect high quality, marketable produce that has
been left behind after commercial harvest. The food they collect is
then transported to food banks a
nd pantries in the tri-county area.
Volunteers will meet by 9 a.m. in Salinas at 495 Brunken Ave.
and caravan to the designated field. Including transportation,
orientation and the actual harvesting of crops, volunteers should
expect to commit around three hours for the gleaning session.
Transportation can be arranged for those without vehicles.

Steps for Success program

HOLLISTER – The Hispanic Scholarship Fund will hold a Steps for Success program for the Latino community in San Benito, Saturday, April 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at San Benito High School. The day will include specialized instruction and college preparation information to help families navigate through the college application process. The focus will include preparing for the SAT, financial aid and how to write personal statements. The program is free.

Junior Ranger Day

PINNACLES – Pinnacles National Monument will be finishing up National Parks Week with a Junior Ranger Day Saturday, April 28, starting at Bear Gulch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children will be given activity books they can complete as they walk around the park. When completed, they can turn in their booklets to a ranger to earn a patch or a badge and a certificate. Other events include a ranger-led hike starting at Bear Gulch at 10:30 a.m. and a junior ranger hike starting at noon. There will also be a 3 p.m. ranger talk at Bear Gulch.

Fire victim benefit

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – A benefit to aid the Nico Solis family is planned for this Saturday, April 28, starting at noon at Daisy’s Saloon on Third Street in San Juan Bautista.

The Solis family home was badly damaged in a recent fire. The benefit includes lunch, with a donation requested, as well as a drawing.

Donations also may be made by sending contributions to Daisy’s Saloon, P.O. Box 51, San Juan Bautista, CA 95045.

Hold your fire

SAN BENITO – The backyard burn season officially ends in San Benito, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties on Monday, April 30.

According to the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District, the season typically runs from Dec. 1 to the end of April, but is closed during the dry months to reduce the risk of wildfire and due to air quality concerns.

People are encouraged to use other methods to dispose of wood waste whenever possible.

Junior Rangers take note

PINNACLES – Pinnacles National Monument was selected this week to receive a 2007 Junior Ranger Ambassadors grant.

The funds will be used to support the development of a three-level Junior Ranger booklet, design and implement its first fully articulated companion program for outreach and make the entire program accessible to all children and families interested in Pinnacles.

“This grant will create a Junior Ranger program that is more meaningful to our younger visitors and their families,” said Eric Brunnemann, superintendent at the monument some 32 miles south of Hollister.

We care about kids

SAN BENITO – First 5 San Benito Children and Families Commission, in partnership with Go Kids, recently announced the continuation of the Comprehensive Approaches to Raising Educational Standards (CARES) program in the county.

Now in its second year, the program staff is now accepting applications from families.

The program is designed to improve child care in San Benito County through incentives to providers, professional development and workshops.
