It was a rodeo to remember
Another successful San Benito County Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo
has come and gone for another year. It was a great weekend with
great weather, great friends and great fun. Many other things took
place in South County last week besides the horse show as well.
Birthday wishes go out to Vern Scattini who celebrated last
Friday, the 22nd at the horse show. His birthday always seems to
fall during Bolado so we always get to celebrate there. Blake
Willoughby also celebrated his 25th birthday last week. A barbecue
was held in his honor at the home of Hec and Kasey Hurley last
Wednesday night. Some of those attending included Tom and Wendy
Willoughby, Emogene Willoughby, Tommy Willoughby, Nessen Schmidt
and Val Bassetti, Colleen Sabin, Andy, Tamra, Wacey and Mattie
Barrington, the Sans Family, Sandy and Jessika Silva and Vern and
Jo Ann Scattini.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Department will be hosting an
informational meeting this Thursday evening at Tully Hall in South
County. It will be an informal
”
meet and greet
”
with all the law enforcement agencies in South County. It will
include representatives from the sheriff’s department, Highway
Patrol, state Department of Fish and Game and BLM. For all those
South County folks who are sick and tired of the fast motorcycles
on Hwy. 25, this may be your chance to voice those opinions! The
meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at Tully Hall. Contact Bill Rist for
more information.
Now, on to the winners at Bolado Park last weekend.
Congratulations to all those who participated and produced the
event. Sure looked like the attendance was up in the stands this
year as each day I was there the stands looked pretty full. The
weather was beautiful, not too hot, just perfect. Huge
congratulations go out to little Katie Nino who was named Junior
All-Around Champion this year. Seems I was hearing her name all
weekend so it was a well deserved title, congratulations Katie! The
Senior Track All-Around Champion was Tina Mansmith and there was a
three-way tie for the Senior Arena All-Around between Jeff Cabral,
Ross Ketchum and Joe Spencer. All three of them will be awarded an
All-Around buckle instead of a coin toss for one. I like that much
better than flipping a coin. Individual award winners included:
Bill Askew, Figure 8; Ben Reid, Bull Riding; Sam Swan, Bronc
Riding; Jeff Cabral, Steer Wrestling; Chad Zgragen, Tie Down
Roping; Danielle Craig and David Porteur, Family Team Roping; Shane
Higgins and Anthony Pomo, Team Roping; Tom Nino, Mike Nino and
Mitch Bourdett, Cattle Sorting; Tracy Brooks, Senior Barrel Racing;
and Ashley Hartwig, Junior Barrel Racing. Congratulations to all
the winners and thanks to the directors for another great
weekend.
Some of those competing or watching the show from South County
included: the Barrington Family, the Brewen Family, the Sans
Family, the Sabin Family, Vern and Jo Ann Scattini, Jeff and Jean
Schmidt, the Popnoe Family, the Nino Family, Nessen Schmidt, Val
Basetti, the Garza Family, Lisa Smith, Gabe Williams Family, Blane
and Blair Strohn and Ed Strohn.
King City Little League has finished up its regular season and
is now on to the Tournament of Champions play and All-Star
tournaments. Congratulations to the Major Reds team and Manager
Brent Green and Coach Ralph Rianda as they are still in the hunt
for the TOC. They will be competing the rest of this
week for a District 9 Title. The All-Star tournament will begin
this weekend for the 9-10 year old teams in Hollister. Best of luck
to all players and coaches in the tournaments.
Have a great week, and be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at
we********@*ol.com with any news you’d like to share.
