Hollister – For the first time in 40 years, a member of the San Benito County American Legion Post has been elected commander of the greater district – including Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.

Hollister resident Richard Wagoner was elected in May as commander of the Department of California District 28 for a one-year term. Wagoner will be sworn in June 24 at the statewide meeting to be attended by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“I was pretty honored,” Wagoner said of his election. “After all, it’s been a long time since anyone from Hollister has been chosen.”

As district commander, Wagoner will work with other posts to help recruitment efforts and organize service projects.

In addition, Dolly DeVasier of the San Benito Post has been elected as a member of the executive board for the district.

Despite declining membership at many American Legion posts, Wagoner noted how Hollister has managed to maintain members.

“Just recently, we broke the 100-member mark, so that’s probably led to a lot of support that I’ve gained,” he said. “I’m really proud to represent post 69 as the district commander.”
