Hollister residents have started seeing signs of construction for the Highway 25 Bypass throughout town over the last week. Pavex Construction, under contract to the county Council of Governments to construct the bypass, officially started work on the project May 21. Construction is scheduled to continue for the next 12-15 months.

Pavex recently set up offices in portable structures on Sunnyslope Road between Airline and Memorial Drive. Staff for the construction firm as well as the project’s resident engineer are working from those offices. Construction equipment and other heavy vehicles, however, will be housed in the construction area.

Construction hours will be from about 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The project is primarily a new facility, but some detours and lane closures will be required in the area of Sunnyslope Road and Airline Highway and at the intersection of Highway 25 and San Felipe Road. Pavex must follow COG guidelines regarding road closures and detours to minimize the impacts of construction to the community.

Residents and community members are invited to an open house on Tuesday, June 5 between 4 and 7 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building on San Benito Street. COG staff will be on hand to answer questions about the project and the impacts of construction and future detours.

An information hotline for the project is available at 1-800-HWY2511 (1-800-499-2511). A project Web site will also be available in the coming weeks, according to COG’s Mary Dinkuhn.
