Get the right feel on your downswing
Over the top. Casting. Swing from the top. We have all heard
these terms, but what do they really mean? What they are all saying
is that we are starting the down swing by pulling the right
shoulder out and across the intended target line, thus creating
side spin on the golf ball.

Over the top. Casting. Swing from the top. We have all heard these terms, but what do they really mean? What they are all saying is that we are starting the down swing by pulling the right shoulder out and across the intended target line, thus creating side spin on the golf ball.
The hands, arms and shoulders are speed producers; if they start the downward motion the lower body (the bigger support muscles) can’t catch up and will stay behind to keep you from being pulled forward and off balance.
As a result, the weight shift necessary to bring you square with the ball cannot occur. Here’s a simple way you can feel what the start of the down swing should feel like. Stand up and hold your arms straight out from your shoulders, relax for a second and then just let your arms fall to your sides. Repeat this motion 3 or 4 times until you start to feel how fast your arms fall just by using gravity itself.
This is the feeling you are trying to find with your wedges. The next time you go to the driving range just let gravity start the club down and allow your body to react to the club head moving towards your intended target. For shorter shots less back swing, less follow thru, longer shots bigger back swing bigger finish.
Gravity is perfect. Have you ever dropped something and had it hit the ceiling? Neither have I. Since the golf ball is on the ground it just makes sense not to mess with perfection. Play well.
