Graffiti covers a faded mural on the retaining wall along Vista Park Hill.

Keeping an eye on the community
When it comes to keeping the community safe and looking good
sometimes it takes a little effort on the part of citizens. A few
weeks ago a staff member slipped while walking along a neighborhood
sidewalk. The culprit was a leaking pipe that dripped for weeks and
created a mossy mess. A few calls from citizens and the city had
cleaned up the mess in days.

When it comes to keeping the community safe and looking good sometimes it takes a little effort on the part of citizens. A few weeks ago a staff member slipped while walking along a neighborhood sidewalk. The culprit was a leaking pipe that dripped for weeks and created a mossy mess. A few calls from citizens and the city had cleaned up the mess in days.

That’s why we are launching a new feature that will run every other week in the Weekend Pinnacle. We encourage citizens to share with us public places around town that need a little work to keep them safe, healthy and appealing for the public. We will contact the proper city department to notify them of the issue and follow the progress here in the paper so the community will know when the problem has been remedied.

Day One

For our first installment, we sent a photographer out around town to scour for eyesores. We found a faded mural at the corner of Monterey and Third streets. The muted mural is covered in graffiti. After a quick call to the Public Works department at City Hall, a staff member told us the retaining wall at the foot of Vista Park Hill is maintained by the Parks Department. Public Works and the Parks Department take care of graffiti that is on city property. If a resident notifies Public Works or the Parks Department of graffiti they will get out and take care of it as soon as they can.

Now comes the waiting part. We will keep in touch with the department to see how long it takes them to cover up the graffiti along the wall and if need be, check in with the head of the department, Clay Lee, the director of community services. Stay tuned…
