Hayward – Gavilan women’s volleyball put everything on the line, but fell painstakingly short on Wednesday, losing in five games to Chabot College in Hayward.
In the fifth and final frame, the Rams (1-2) had a chance to seal the deal with a 14-13 advantage, but a service fault led to three straight points for their opponents and a defeat. The overall score in the contest was 30-28, 28-30, 29-31, 30-24, 14-16.
“The biggest thing that happened was that their outside hitter got hurt in the first game,” Gavilan coach Kevin Kramer said. “It kind of brought their team closer together, just guts-out. Nothing hit the floor after that.”
Adding drama to the game was the fact that Kramer coached Chabot for the past three years before this season. Also, the opposing coach, Amber Sammons, is the daughter of Kramer’s high school coach at Castro Valley.
“It was pretty close game on both sides,” Kramer said. “All the way through, it was ugly and amazing, all in one.”
Jamie Temperino had 27 kills and 14 digs to lead the Rams while Teresa Hodges had 16 kills, six aces and 13 digs. Gilroy native Barbie Csore had 12 kills and three aces and setter Janet Unciano had 44 assists.
“We’re young and we’re learning,” Kramer said, “and the girls are battling and hopefully this will help on down the road.”
