Atlanta – After pitching strong out of the bullpen and earning his first Major League win last week, Hollister resident Daniel Barone was back on the mound Wednesday, starting for the Florida Marlins in Atlanta.

The 2001 San Benito High School graduate, however, threw 4.1 innings, scattered seven hits and allowed four earned runs.

“They’re good hitters; they took advantage,” Barone told the Associated Press. “I got a couple of pitches up, and they were able to capitalize on it.”

The Braves won the game 5-1 at Turner Field in Atlanta. Barone (1-3) allowed one walk, two homers and struck out one. His ERA is currently 5.40.

The righty is scheduled to start again Tuesday when the Marlins return to Miami to face the Chicago Cubs. Barone is slated to be opposite Ted Lilly.

Edgar Renteria had three hits, including a homer, Chipper Jones had two hits and drove in a run and Chuck James allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings as Atlanta completed a three-game sweep of last-place Florida.

The Braves (79-73) have won four straight to match the win total from last year’s 79-83 team. Atlanta began the day 5 1/2 games back in the NL East and NL wild-card standings.

With one out in the first, Renteria lined a homer to center off Barone. Chipper Jones followed with a walk, and Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer to right for a 3-0 lead.
