Local Cal Fireman honored for his duty
On October 18, local and state firefighters honored Matthew Will, a 30-year-old Hollister resident, who died Oct. 9 from injuries he suffered while operating a bulldozer during a forest fire that was blazing near Big Sur. Will was attempting to free another machine that was trapped when his bulldozer slipped down a steep slope.
The Friday afternoon services began at the Hollister Air Attack Base as a caravan of statewide fire trucks followed Matthew down San Benito Street and out to Bolado Park. On route to the park, people stood street side holding signs of support for Will’s family.
At the Bolado Park memorial service, colleagues spoke highly of Will, remembering the times they had had with him on and off the job. Will is survived by his wife Diana Will, his 10 year-old son Trysten and his 8 year-old daughter Elsie.
