Who runs the site: The site is run by Matt and Mike Chapman who wrote a children’s book called “The Homestar Runner Enters the Strongest Man in the World Contest,” as a joke. They made 15 more books.
In 1999, Mike learned Macromedia Flash and started using it to animate the characters from the books.
Who is likely to use the site: College kids with lots of time to waste or other adults looking for a good wholesome laugh.
Pros: The Chapman brothers created a hilarious cast of characters and watching the cartoons that are full of clean laughs is completely free. Users don’t have to sign up for an account to access any of the features on the site.
Some of the characters on the site include Strongbad, the Cheat and Homestar Runner himself. Are they human? Are they animals? It doesn’t matter because the cartoons are hilarious. Strongbad, a creature with a Mexican wrestling mask and boxing gloves is my favorite character. Click on the Strongbad e-mails link to hear his responses to visitor e-mails. The latest is his advice on choosing which slumber parties to attend.
While I had watched almost all the e-mail cartoons when I was in graduate school a few years ago, a recent visit to the site showed new features and plenty of new cartoons. The cartoons have gotten more advanced, but it’s the silly stories that make them worth watching.
The site also has a link to a store for fans who want T-shirts or other items, but it is definitely not the focus of the site.
Cons: If you don’t have a lot of free time, don’t go to the site. It is a huge time suck, which is why it was a favorite when I was procrastinating from doing homework back in school.
Also the site has lots of graphics and sound so a good computer will make for a better experience than a bad one.
