Hollister – Habitat for Humanity of San Benito County is hold its annual fundraiser today.

The Harvest Ride and Dinner Dance will raise money for the nonprofit organization that builds and rehabilitates houses for people who can’t afford them.

The group was organized in San Benito County and became affiliated with the national organization in September 2005. Since then, the local Habitat chapter has been putting on fundraisers to get enough money to start some projects.

“We have been quite successful. We have what I would consider good nest-egg money,” said George Lewis, president of Habitat San Benito County.

There are three rehabilitation projects the nonprofit is hoping to start in the next two to three months, Lewis said.

Lewis said he feels Habitat for Humanity will be an important presence in the community – where housing can be expensive and difficult to find.

“There are a lot of people that need affordable housing. There really is a need in this community for housing that can be purchased by those less fortunate than we are,” Lewis said.
