The San Benito boys water polo team lost 10-6 Friday in the Tri-County Athletic League semifinals to Carmel.
Even with the loss, the Haybalers still have a chance to qualify for the Central Coast Section playoffs if they can beat Palma in the third/fourth-place game today at Santa Catalina School. Game time is at 11 a.m.
“I’d say in a nutshell, we made an awful lot of mistakes,” said San Benito Coach Tom Agan. “They pretty much outplayed us today. This one hurts a little. We need to have better passing. We turned the ball over way too many times.”
Both Jordan Schafer and Adam Rianda had three goals each for the ‘Balers. Goalie Kyle Reuther had five saves.
San Benito kept the game close within two goals until the final three minutes of the game when they weren’t able to convert, and Carmel got a quick score. The Haybalers scored first in the game but were down 3-2 after the first quarter.
Even though San Benito defeated Palma 14-10 in their last meeting, Agan knows it won’t be easy.
“We’re going to have to work to get by them,” Agan said. “Palma gave us a good game last time. We can’t turn over the ball like we did today.”
