The Markham’s celebrate 50 years

Family and friends gathered recently at Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church to witness the renewing of vows on the occasion of the 50th wedding anniversary of Gale (Mark) and Marilyn Markham. Pastor Mark Inouye conducted the ceremony. On Aug. 25, 1957, the couple wed at Community Baptist Church in King City, just days before Mark, serving in the U.S. Air Force, was sent to RAF Brize Norton, England. Mark finished his undergraduate work in Education at San Jose State University in 1962. By then two daughters had joined them: Cindy Louise and Cheryl Lynn. The family moved to Morgan Hill. Mark taught reading and social studies at the junior high level, later becoming a counselor at Britton Middle School. Marilyn taught piano privately, finishing degrees in music at San Jose State and Arizona State universities. She taught piano classes at Gavilan College in Gilroy and still serves as organist/accompanist at Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church and playing keyboard in the South Bay Swing Band. Mark retired after 30-plus years in the local schools. Nearby family includes Philip and Cindy Gregory, with children Stephanie, Seth, and Garrett, in Gilroy. Cheryl Woodward and daughter, Kiley, live in Morgan Hill. The couple enjoys traveling and creating special memories with their four grandchildren.

Marie Davis

Marie Davis was born Dec. 3, 2007 at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital in Hollister to Nicole and Michael Davis of Hollister. She weighed 7 pounds, 5 ounces.

HONORS

Jovanna Rojas

Air Force Airman Jovanna R. Rojas has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

She is the daughter of Joe Rojas of Gilroy and a 2007 graduate of Gilroy High School.

Angel Grimaldo-Esquer

Marine Corps Pvt. Angel Grimaldo-Esquer, of Hollister, recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Dept. in San Diego. Grimaldo-Esquer and fellow recruits spent numerous hours of intense physical and mental conditioning, including classroom and field assignments. They also received instruction on Marine Corps’ core values: Honor, Courage, & Commitment as well as USMC History and first aide. The training ended in The Crucible, a 56 hour, team evaluation culminating in an emotional ceremony in which the recruits were presented with the Eagle, Globe & Anchor, the Marine Corps Emblem, and addressed as “United States Marines” for the first time in their careers.

Grimaldo-Esquer will return to San Diego for Marine Combat Training for four weeks then transfer to Twenty-Nine Palms where he will begin his education in communications. Currently Grimaldo-Esquer is working out of the Salinas office doing hometown recruitment and working with Toys ‘R’ Us Toys for Tots program.

Grimaldo-Esquer is a 2007 graduate of San Benito High School. He is the son of Cindy Grimaldo, grandson of Olga Grimaldo and the late Manuel Grimaldo of Hollister, and brother to Robert Emmanuel Garza.

Winter recital for pianists

Students from Laurie Avey’s Piano Studio performed on Dec. 8. Composers included C.W. Reid, Sheftel and many Christmas carols were played and enjoyed. ENGAGEMENT

Perino/Ostoja

Jeannine Perino and Steve Estoja were engaged May 20, 2007.

Jeannine is the daughter of Stan and Sue Perino of Gilroy. She attended San Jose State University and is a kindergarten teacher in Hollister.

Steve is the son of Frank and Kathy Ostoja of Hollister. He is a foreman for Granite Construction.

The couple plan a July 5, 2008 wedding.
