Vikings advance to title game

The Hollister Vikings advanced to Friday’s Pop Warner Super Bowl when they defeated the Orange Park Cyclones (Florida) 14-6 Tuesday in Orlando, Fla. The Junior Pee Wee Vikings will now play in the national championship on Friday against the Fairfield Giants (Connecticut). Fairfield defeated the Belmont Red Raiders in their opening-round game 25-6.

Details of Tuesday’s game will be printed later this week in the Hollister Free Lance.

Game rescheduled

Monday’s boys soccer match between the San Benito Haybalers and the Monterey Toreadors was cancelled. As of press time, the game has not been rescheduled. San Benito’s next game will be held Thursday at Pebble Beach against Stevenson at 3:30 p.m.

BASKETBALL

Lady ‘Balers defeat King City

The San Benito Lady ‘Balers defeated King City 56-31 last Saturday behind 19 points from Victoria Aguilera.

The win marked the second victory in the early season at the time for San Benito, who pushed their win total to three on Monday with a 50-28 win at Live Oak.

After the two teams were tied 12-12 after one quarter, San Benito outscored King City 44-19 for the remainder of the game, holding their opponent to single digits in each quarter.

Elena Fata had six points behind a pair of 3-pointers and had five steals as well, while Vanessa Farias added seven points and nine assists on the night. Lauren Ademek contributed six points and seven rebounds.

The Lady ‘Balers will play in the Bill Getris Classic starting on Thursday in Salinas. San Benito is scheduled to play Northgate (Walnut Creek) at 6:30 p.m., at Salinas High School.

JV Note: The San Benito junior varsity team split their two previous matchups, falling to King City last Saturday by one point, but routing Live Oak Monday by 47.

Despite seven points a piece from Melisah Cortez, Kim Warner and Arielle Rianda, the Lady ‘Balers lost to King City 33-32. Said coach Karen Fortino, “That was a great game – just back and forth the whole time.”

On Monday, though, it was a far different story. Led by 12 points from Rianda and 11 from Cassie Pate, San Benito defeated Live Oak 51-4. The JVs will play their next game Dec. 13 when they’ll host Aptos at 6:30 p.m.
