The path to better scores
If you had a leak in your roof, the first thing you would need to do to repair it is find the hole. That is the same way that you need to approach improving in golf. If you don’t know where the “leak” in your golf swing is, how can you change it? I’ll show you a way to discover whether you need more practice for distance or direction in your putting.
Get a blank piece of 8×11-inch paper. Get a pen and starting in the upper left corner draw a line three inches straight down, then not breaking the line, three inches to the right then down three more inches then three more inches to the right and lastly down three more inches. It should look like two steps from a staircase. Then draw another line three-quarter-inches across from it. It should look somewhat like a drainpipe. You can do this with a ruler to make it look better for this test. At the top of the “pipe” write start and at the bottom write stop. Now put the paper away until tomorrow.
Get the paper set it down in front of you take a pen and put the point at the word start so that it is in the middle of the two lines. Now close your eyes and trying to keep the line inside the pipe trace down to the word stop and open your eyes. How did you do?
If your line stopped before or after the word stop any significant distance you need to practice your distance when practicing your putting. If your line runs in and out of the pipe you have difficulty with direction and need to find the best way for you to aim. If you are bad at both distance and direction, my number is at the end of this column. Use it. When your eyes are closed you are only dealing with your perceptions of distance and direction. You can always find a way to improve them, but you first need to find the “leak.” Play well.
