The Green Phone was created so the fans could voice their opinions. Give us a call and let us know what’s on your mind.

CALLER 1: I’m really glad that the Giants are doing good. Yeah. Go Giants.

GREEN PHONE: Caller 1, we’re happy that you’re happy. And we’re glad that the Giants are off to a strong start, too. After a dismal 2005, we’re cautiously optimistic that the magic is back at Third & King. The caliber of players the Giants have is unquestioned. Unfortunately for San Francisco, also unquestioned are those dated numbers on the players’ birth certificates. But the early returns on offseason additions to the pitching staff have been outstanding. Matt Morris and Tim Worrell, in particular, look to be great pick-ups in areas that hurt the team last season. If the team remains healthy, the Giants should have no peer in the NL West, especially with Eric Gagne on the shelf again for Los Angeles. Speaking of the Dodgers, a series win over San Francisco’s southern rival this weekend would keep the good times rolling. Thanks for weighing in, Caller 1.

CALLER 2: Hi Green Phone. Just curious about these track meets. How come Gilroy and Hollister haven’t been in the same tournament yet? You’d think they’d want to take each other on, but every time I look, the teams are in separate places. What gives?

GREEN PHONE: Well, Caller 2, we hope you pick up the newspaper this morning because, lo and behold, Gilroy and San Benito’s track and field teams will be competing at the same meet this weekend. The Mustangs and Haybalers are set to take on the field at the Hampton-Phillips Invitational, so hop in your car and head up to San Jose. But your point is well taken. Aside from the teams’ early-season TCAL dual meet, Gilroy and San Benito athletes haven’t competed against each other. We hope that’s a trend which changes in the future as rivalries at track meets make the competition all the more exciting. With the successful return of the Avis Kelley Invitational in Gilroy last weekend, we hope that the ‘Balers enter the field next year. An invitational in the South Valley that is alluring enough to draw WCAL powerhouses Bellarmine and Mitty, as well as TCAL mainstays Palma and Salinas, certainly merits attendance by San Benito. As for this season, make sure to check out the TCAL Trials and Championships. Not only will the ‘Balers and Mustangs face off, but every other league team will be there, too.
