A quick look at local events
Mountain lion shot and killed

GILROY – Gilroy Police officers killed a mountain lion that wandered into a densely populated neighborhood on the east side of Gilroy May 28. A family reported the large animal to the local police around 10:45 a.m. when it wandered into the yard where their dog was tied up. The lion jumped into a tree while officers weighed their options.

After consulting with officials from the California Department of Fish and Game, the officers decided other options would not work. Tranquilizing the animal was considered, but because tranquilizers can take up to ten minutes to work the officers decided against it. The proximity of the Polk Court neighborhood to San Ysidro Park and South Valley Middle School, which are both used on the weekends, led the officers to kill the animal. Fish and Game picked up the body. The mountain lion was approximately 18 months old and weighed between 65-75 pounds, according to a police report.
