MORGAN HILL –Specialized Bicycle Components Inc. and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission are voluntarily recalling roughly 2,700 bicycles with SW carbon stem with a magnesium faceplate.

The magnesium faceplate holds the bike’s handlebar in place. The faceplates on the recalled stems can crack allowing the handlebar to break off the bicycle, posing a serious fall hazard, the CPSC stated.

Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Specialized has received five reports of the magnesium faceplate exhibiting cracks. No injuries have been reported.

The SW Carbon Stem with Magnesium Faceplate is black with the words “S-Works” and “Magnesium Faceplate” printed on it.

The stems were included as original equipment on the following 2006 bicycles models: S-Works Tarmac, Tarmac Pro, S-Works Roubaix, Roubaix Pro, Allez Pro and S-Works Transition.

It was also sold as an after market item under the name S-Works Advanced Composite Mag Road Stem.

The component was sold through authorized Specialized retailers from June 2005 through April 2006. The Taiwan-manufactured faceplate will be replaced free of charge, according to a Specialized press release.

Specialized Bicycle’s 1981 introduction of the Stumpjumper established the company as a top-seller in bicycle shops, where it ranks No. 2, behind Trek, for high-end cycles. The company also makes road bikes, commuter/city bikes, children’s bikes, and BMX bikes.

Specialized sponsors a variety of professional teams, as well as supporting local grassroots “factory teams,” set up through Specialized retailers.

Specialized is in the process of rolling out its “Concept Stores” across the country. In June the Cynergy Cycles in Santa Monica, Bike Spring in Mountain View and Surf City Cyclery in Huntington Beach, with a number of other stores in major markets across the country and worldwide in the pipeline.

This year marks the silver anniversary of the Stumpjumper, the first mountain bike available from a local bike shop. Specialized has commissioned the publication of a 128-page, full color, hardcover book entitled “Stumpjumper: 25 Years of Mountain Biking” The company said it will donate all of the profits from the book to the International Mountain Bike Association and the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.

Written by Mark Riedy, formerly an editor at Bicycling Magazine, the book will be made available through Specialized dealers and select retailers. It will be translated in to six different languages (including German, French, Spanish, Italian, Chinese and Japanese), and will be sold through traditional booksellers.

“This book is a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Stumpjumper,” said Specialized founder and President Mike Sinyard in a release. “But it’s more than that. We wanted to honor the passionate people, important places and unique culture that make our sport so amazing.”

Riedy said the company is pulling out all the stops for the project.

“This project is a dream,” said Riedy, who left Bicycling in June to start his own company, True Communications. “Specialized has invested much more time, money and resources in this book than any publisher ever could. The result is the most colorful and vibrant mountain bike book ever. The stories we’ve dug up and the photos we’ve found are just astounding.”

Design duties for the volume have been handled by San Francisco -based VehicleSF, which has worked with sports and lifestyle clients such as Nike, Reebok, Phat Farm and EA Sports.

Sinyard founded Specialized Bicycle in 1974; he owns a majority stake in the privately held company.
