Concerned about car accidents, our caller complained about a large landscaping truck that parks on the side of the road near her father’s driveway. The vehicle obstructs the view of people trying to pull out of the driveway, she said.
“As we pull out of the driveway we can’t see if a car is coming,” she said, adding that her father has had some near-accidents pulling out of the driveway.
The Crusader called Officer Rosie Betanio with the Hollister Police Department. She suggested that our caller contact the department on its non-emergency number and tell them about the problem.
“An officer will go out and see if the vehicle is actually a hazard,” Betanio said. If it is determined that the vehicle is a hazard, she added, the officer will talk to the vehicle owner about where he can park.
The Hollister Police Department’s non-emergency line is 636-4330.
Fourth of July Wrap-up
“I would like to know how many citations and/or arrests were made this past Fourth of July weekend for the use of illegal fireworks,” our caller inquired. “With Hollister’s ‘Zero-Tolerance’ policy and the amount of illegal fireworks going off in my neighborhood alone, I would expect there to have been a large amount of citations issued.”
The Crusader spoke with Hollister Code Enforcement Officer Mike Chambless, who said he cited one person for illegal fireworks. However, he added, he gave more than 100 warnings throughout the Holiday week. When giving a warning, he said, he also confiscated any illegal fireworks that were found.
The Hollister Fire Department also cited one person, according to Christine Black, who works for the department.
“We confiscated a lot,” she said.
Both Chambless and Black told the Crusader that the confiscated fireworks are sent to the state fire marshal, who ignites them in a metal subterranean container.
