San Juan Bautista – Behind stellar play at the net and an all-around solid defensive night, the Anzar girls’ volleyball team roared to its ninth consecutive victory by sweeping visiting Soledad Monday.
Sparked by a strong opening game by middles Jessica Staley and Christina Flores, the Hawks won 25-11, 25-21, 25-15 to improve to 10-2 in Mission Trail Athletic League matches heading into their showdown at first-place King City on Wednesday.
“Today, they just put up a huge wall,” Anzar co-head coach Mike Dorney said of his middles. “It was pretty impressive. … (Soledad) didn’t know what to do with us because of our middles and our defenders.”
Staley finished with five kills and three blocks, while Flores had four kills and three blocks. The Deleissegues sisters did a fine job as well. Senior Emily had 12 kills, 23 digs and eight aces, while sophomore Erin posted eight kills, 12 digs and four aces.
As a team, the Hawks (16-4) recorded 17 aces.
With undefeated King City (12-0) next, Dorney said a strong performance Wednesday could do wonders for his team. “It’s huge,” he said. “Any time you go into an undefeated team, it makes a difference not only that time, but for the rest of the season and the playoffs.”
Though an MTAL title remains a long shot even with a victory Wednesday, the Hawks hope their impressive late-season run continues with a strong showing in the Central Coast Section Division V playoffs.
