San Benito 38, Everett Alvarez 6
The San Benito High football team cruised to a 38-6 win in its
league opener over the Eagles of Everett Alvarez. The win moves the
defending Central Coast Section champion Balers to 4-1 overall this
season. This week the Balers are off enjoying a bye week before
traveling to North Salinas High next Friday where they will butt
helmets with the 1-4 Vikings. In the game against Alvarez Baler
running back Tim Lango scored a pair of touchdowns and rushed for
126 yards on 16 carries. Quarterback Ronnie Fhurong scored on a
26-yard scamper of his own. Taylor Griffith and Kevin Burley also
scored touchdowns for the Balers and place-kicker Dru Blake had a
pair of field goals.

Boys’ Water Polo
Last weekend, the San Benito High boys’ water polo team played in the St. Francis tournament, which took place at Cupertino High School. In the first game of the tournament the Balers fell 13-9 to Los Altos High before rebounding with a 7-6 win over Los Gatos the following day. The Balers final game resulted in a hard-fought 11-10 loss to Cupertino High in a nip-and-tuck battle that could have gone either way.
On Monday, the Balers were at home where they played Carmel and won by and impressive 19-7 margin.
The Balers are now a perfect 4-0 and 10-4 overall.
Girls’ Volleyball
San Benito 3, Salinas 0
The San Benito High girls’ volleyball team is on fire this season. On Tuesday the first-place Balers picked up a key road victory over third-place Salinas, beating the Cowboys in straight games by scores of 26-24, 25-18, 26-24. The Balers are now 5-0 in league and 19-4 overall. In the impressive win Emily Kortsen had 18 kills and Chelsea Fowles had 12.
