Hollister – San Benito’s potential state title run will begin at 7pm today when the newly-crowned Central Coast Section champions will take on Deer Valley of Antioch in the first round of the CIF Northern California playoffs.
The No. 3 seed ‘Balers, by virtue of their section championship, will host the Wolverines, who were runner-ups in the North Coast Section and boast a record of 28-9.
“It’s a tough draw for the first round,” San Benito coach Dean Askanas said. “But it’s the NorCals, so everyone’s tough.”
The San Benito boys basketball team’s season-opener against Milpitas, which had been scheduled for 7pm at home today, was moved to the O’Donnell Gym to accommodate the volleyball game.
Askanas said the opportunity to host a game of this magnitude should be a special experience.
“It’s good on few different levels,” Askanas said. “It’s great because we’re the CCS champions and it’s great to have the Hollister crowd supporting us in full.”
A win for the ‘Balers would move them to within three wins of a state championship and would set them up against the winner of tonight’s game between Nevada Union of Grass Valley or Lowell of San Francisco.
If Nevada Union were to win that matchup, San Benito would travel to face the Miners. If Lowell were to win, the ‘Balers would host that second round showdown.
