Gilroy – Robert ‘the Ghost’ Guerrero’s next fight will be overseas, the Free Lance has learned.
According to reports on fightnews.com, Guerrero will face Spend Abazi of Denmark for the vacant International Boxing Federation featherweight title early in 2007.
Neither Guerrero nor his co-manager, Bob Santos, were available for comment.
Guerrero, the 23-year-old Gilroy fighter, lost by unanimous decision Nov. 4 to Orlando Salido in the title bout at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
Salido was stripped of the title four days later when tests revealed the presence of Nandrolone, a banned steroid, in his system. The IBF then mandated that Guerrero and Abazi, its two highest ranked featherweights, meet for the vacant title.
Promoters Dan Goosen, who represents Guerrero, and Bettina Palle, who doubles as Abazi’s manager, came to an agreement that the fight would be held in Denmark. Like Abazi, 28, Palle is based in Denmark.
The Albanian-born Abazi, who has never fought outside of Europe and, in fact, has fought just once outside of Denmark, is 35-1-1 with 10 knockouts. Guerrero’s record is 19-1-1 with his last fight a no contest.
