Baseball’s favorite sideshow should begin in mid-May if Bonds stays healthy. And, yes, Bonds going after the home run record is nothing more than a sideshow.
It doesn’t matter what side of the issue you are on when it comes to what was legal and illegal before Major League Baseball’s alleged “tough” new drug deal was struck.
Let’s set the record straight. There’s only one reason why the Giants, or any team would sign Bonds at this point. And many of us, myself included, will NEVER consider Bonds the greatest home run hitter of all time.
In my mind, that will always be Hank Aaron whose body or mind never gave any indication that he was chemically enhanced during a distinguished career when he hit 755 home runs.
If Bonds had a shred of decency, he would retire from baseball immediately. By not doing so, he only snubs Aaron and the record the longtime Brave worked so hard to achieve.
He was ready to do just that to Giants’ fans before deciding he acquiesced and accepted the team’s $16 million offer.
Let’s not forget that two years ago Bonds played in 14 games and got paid $18 million. Not a bad gig, getting better than $1.25 million a game. He has been far from the consummate teammate although you won’t hear it from others who are worried that they may be accused of jealousy.
At one time, Bonds was the best player in baseball, a bona fide 40-40 player (unlike Jose Canseco). That was before he decided it wasn’t fair that fans were showing more love for Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. So Bonds, who already the best eye in the game, decided he would “bulk up,” and 73 home runs followed.
He already had a good enough friend who would cover up for his actions to the point of even accepting jail time. It must have seemed like a no-lose situation. After all, what’s the point of being the best when fans are swooning at the feet of others.
Bonds will never get the love that McGwire and Sosa were accorded and it has nothing to do with his love-hate relationship with the media.
It will always be that most people see through Bonds’ shtick. Yeah, even Giants’ fans.
So don’t feel sorry for him. The price of Bonds is already up more than it should be and all because of a couple of records that were never meant to be broken.
