Our first Red Phone caller, concerned about local roadways, asked the Crimson Crusader why construction has not been completed on the Nash Road Bridge project. The $3.9 million bridge construction project will allow motorists to cross the San Benito River during all seasons. Our caller said he thought the project was supposed to have been completed by Oct. 1.

The Crimson Crusader dialed up John Miguel at the San Benito County Public Works Department to get the answer to this important question. Miguel said the project is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 1, 2007. Due to environmental constraints, construction of the bridge has been spread out over two seasons. Work on the project will stop in the coming months as water flow in the San Benito River increases due to winter rains, Miguel said. Work will resume next spring when the water dries up.

Top priority must go to non-personal queries

Our next Red Phone caller wanted to know what kind of car the Crimson Crusader drives to work each day. Before getting to our caller’s question, the growing backlog of personal questions regarding the Crimson Crusader should be noted. The Crimson Crusader strives to answer all questions, but due to the large volume of questions regarding the personal life of our hero, the Crimson Crusader will make it a point to try to answer one of these questions in each subsequent column. It should be noted that while these questions are interesting, other, more pressing Red Phone calls will be given top priority.

And without further ado, on to our caller’s question. The Crimson Crusader owns several cars. On Friday, the Crimson Crusader drove a black 2007 Lotus Exige S to work.

Sticky situation

Our next Red Phone caller, frustrated by a sticker advertisement placed in the Free Lance Tuesday, pointed out that the sticker couldn’t be removed from the paper and blocked one of Free Lance Photographer Nick Lovejoy’s photos on the front page of the newspaper. The Crimson Crusader passed the complaint on to the Free Lance’s advertising department for review. So fret not, faithful Free Lance reader, your concern will be addressed with proper haste.

Beating the Blues

Our final Red Phone caller of the week, a local woman concerned about her neighbor, asked the Crimson Crusader what services are available for those feeling depressed this holiday season. The Crimson Crusader knows the holiday season can be trying for many, so our caped hero placed a call to the San Benito County Mental Health Department to find out where locals can go to get help this winter.

The friendly and knowledgeable woman who answered the phone declined to give her name, but helped the Crimson Crusader get the answers to this important question.

The county operates a 24-hour suicide hotline through the Mental Health Department. Those feeling depressed can call (831)-636-4020 at any time to talk to a licensed clinician about how they are feeling. There is also another local hotline number for those dealing with a crises during the hectic holiday season. That number is (831)-637-7233.
