For the first time this season, the San Benito boys basketball team put itself in the winners’ bracket of a tournament.

The Haybalers did so with a resounding 70-57 win over Soledad in the opener of the Condor Christmas Classic at North Monterey County High on Wednesday.

“It bodes well if we can continue to do well,” said coach John Becerra, whose team dropped the first round games in the Aptos and Independence tournaments.

Behind a balanced scoring attack, San Benito delivered a strong, consistent performance. It led 36-29 at halftime and built that lead to double-digits in the second half.

Becerra was happy to see his team play four quarters of solid basketball.

“We were kind of in control throughout,” Becerra said. “It gives us some confidence.”

Senior forward Todd Janisch paced the ‘Balers with 20 points. He was complemented well by Kevin Medeiros and Sterling Wilson.

Medeiros had a season-high 14 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds. Wilson chipped in with 11 points.

“What’s nice is that we had three big scorers,” Becerra said. “That’s really helps us.”

San Benito continues on in winners’ bracket play and will be back in action at 8pm today. It will face the winner of Wednesday’s late game between Alvarez and host North Monterey County.
