San Juan Bautista – With publisher Linda Lee King out of town, the Free Press is going on hiatus for an undetermined amount of time.
King is in Pennsylvania for family business, and hasn’t announced when she will be coming back, according to Free Press financial backer Jim West of Graniterock.
“It’s a one-person newspaper, and when that one person has to go back east for family matters, you have to take a break,” West said.
Asked if the weekly paper was done for good, West replied, “No, not that I know of.”
Copy Editor Herman Wrede said as far as he knew the future of the paper was still up in the air.
“I learned the news just last week myself. I think it could be started up again, but again I have no knowledge of that,” he said. Wrede said he would rather not comment further with King out of town.
The first issue of the Free Press hit the stands on April 2, 2004. It published every Friday and printed 15,000 free copies a week distributed throughout San Benito, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties, Wrede said.
The single-section paper featured news, book and movie reviews and various columns. It is published by Linda’s Last Chance Ranch Publishing out of San Juan Bautista.
