Hollister – The San Benito Haybalers scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to upset the Tri County Athletic League’s lone undefeated team the Palma Chieftains 28-24 Thursday night, creating a three-way tie for the TCAL championship.
`Balers running back Tim Lango gave Hollister its first lead of the night on what ended up being the game-winning 3-yard rushing touchdown with 7:36 remaining in the fourth quarter. Lango finished with 12 carries for 50 yards and two touchdowns.
“Last week we played horribly,” said San Benito’s head coach Chris Cameron. “Mentally we were a million miles away and Live Oak kicked our butt. Our kids took it to heart, we had strong practices all week and we were real physical and aggressive tonight.”
San Benito fell behind in the first half 14-0 as Palma’s quarterback Jordan Casas threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Orlando Johnson in the first quarter and then hit Michael Willrodt with a 60-yard touchdown just 20 seconds into the second quarter.
The ‘Balers didn’t panic, however, and on their next possession quarterback Karson Klauer burst through the middle for a 52-yard touchdown. Dru Blake’s extra point cut Palma’s lead in half, 14-7.
