The Hollister Pop Warner Pee Wee football Vikings team is just two wins away from winning a national championship.

This morning, the team, which consists of 34 youngsters ranging in age from 9 to 12, boarded a plane for Florida to compete in the Pop Warner Division II Super Bowl at the Walt Disney World Sports Complex in Orlando.

On Tuesday the Vikings will take on the Connecticut-based Pomperoug Warriors in the Division II semifinals. A win against the team from New England would land Hollister in the national title game against either a team from Georgia or one from Southeast Florida.

“I’m really excited,” said head coach Larry Murphy, who guided his squad to a 13-1 record this season. “The parents have been great and really supported the team this year. I’m really proud of the boys too. The coaches prepare them but the boys are the ones who do it. They go take care of business.”

The Vikings’ road to the Pop Warner Super Bowl kicked off with an 18-8 win in the Division II league championship.

That win was followed by an 8-6 win over Anchorage, Alaska in the opening round of Pacific Northwest Regional tournament, which was held in Santa Clara.

The Vikings then captured that regional championship and earned their berth into the national tournament with a 23-0 win last week over a team from Carson City, Nevada.

The Vikings are now one of a select group of eight teams vying for the Division II title.

The cost to make the weeklong trip to Orlando, Florida was roughly $1,000 per child and an additional $1,000 per person-which made raising the funds to go more challenging than any opponent the Vikings faced on the field.

“If a family has a few kids and the parents want to go too, you’re looking at roughly $5,000 to go,” said Murphy, who pointed out that contributions to reimburse the travel expenses could be made by going to www.eteamz.active.com/HollisterPopWarner/
