USDA: USDA Farm Service Agency has been accepting applications from local farmers who suffered at least a 35 percent loss of production or significant quality loss on a 2001 or 2002 year crop due to a natural disaster weather condition. The deadline to file an application is Friday, Jan. 30. Interested farmers must contact the local Farm Service Agency office at 831-637-4360 to schedule an appointment prior to the deadline date.

Spring Grove: The North County Joint Union School District is now registering kindergarten children for 1004-05 school year. Registration packets can be picked up at the Spring Grove School office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each school day. Children entering kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before Dec. 2, 2004. All required paperwork must be on file before a child can be placed on a class list. The following are state and district requirements for incoming kindergartners: birth date verification, CHDP examination, proof of residency and immunizations (polio, OPV or IPV, DTP/DTzP/DT/Td, MMR, hepatitis B, varicella and TB skin test).

Benefit Drive: A benefit drive is being held to raise $10,000 for the families of P.J. Galvan and Matt Lopez. San Benito High School has already raised $6,000. Donations will be accepted until Friday, Jan. 23.

Red Cross: The American Red Cross will be holding an instructor training class for first aid and CPR on Tuesday, Jan. 27 from 5:30 to 10:15 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 31 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, Feb. 3 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. All classes must be attended in order to be certified as an instructor. Historical Society: The San Benito County Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Dunne Park Club House, at Sixth and West streets. Italian Night: The Italian Catholic Federation will hold its annual “Night in Italy” dinner dance Saturday, Jan. 31 at Sacred Heart Church’s O’Reilly Youth Center, Sixth and College streets.

Hors d’ oeuvres and no-host cocktails will be served from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 8 p.m. and dancing. The menu includes barbecued chicken, homemade ravioli, salad, wine and dessert. Proceeds benefit local charities.

10 Mile Run: The 21st annual Mission 10 will be held Saturday, Feb. 7. Race day registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The 10 mile run will begin at 10 a.m. and the 5 kilometer run will begin at 10:15 a.m. It is $20 to enter the race before Jan. 31 and $25 after.
