Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Michael S. Centeno, son of Marylin C. Bowen of Redway, Calif. and Robert R. Centeno of Hollister, and his fellow crewmembers recently welcomed Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Terry Scott aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu in the Arabian Gulf.

Scott visited Peleliu, homeported in San Diego, to eat lunch with the ship’s new chief petty officers and award qualifying enlisted sailors with aviation and surface warfare pins.

Scott also relayed a message of thanks from stateside citizens to Centeno and his fellow Sailors and Marines.

The MCPON serves as the senior enlisted leader of the Navy and is an advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations and to the Chief of Naval Personnel in matters dealing with enlisted personnel and their families.

Centeno is a 1982 graduate of Gilroy High School and joined the Navy in September 1984.
