Nothing can quickly deteriorate a community, county and its
quality of life faster than an increase in crime.
No one realistically expects to return to the days of knowing
everyone in town and leaving your door unlocked whether you lived
in the city or country.
But we all expect and can demand safety for ourselves, our
families and our property and businesses.

This is a tall order these days for law enforcement, despite tremendous advances in crime-stopping and investigative technology.
Street gangs of all sizes and backgrounds are insidious in nature and very difficult to penetrate, let alone combat, apprehend and prosecute. They are well-organized and have financial backing, not a good mix when the intent is violent and criminal.
Drug and alcohol abuse and their illegal or underage delivery systems continue to be a nightmare for society in general, but are particularly difficult for the law enforcement community.
Geographically we are not much safer anymore than other cities and counties of similar size. It’s virtually impossible to block every entrance and escape route for the out-of-town intruders.
A major team effort to fight this multi-headed monster is needed and it must fall under strong leadership. We feel this is in place in the three major divisions of law enforcement that watch over San Benito County.
We are not going to mix crime fighting and political differences here.
Sheriff Curtis Hill, CHP Commander Bob Davies and even just-arrived Hollister Police Chief Jeff Miller have done an excellent job in mobilizing the people and resources available to keep crime from increasing at an almost expected rate.
District Attorney John Sarsfield has done the same with his team and staff when it comes to sending a message to current and potential criminals of all ages in San Benito County.
You will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The biggest prevention piece of the puzzle, however, is each and every one of us.
We are the eyes and ears of the county and community every day and night. The latest in crime-fighting gadgetry is nothing compared to residents who stay aware.
We are the caring parents, teachers and role models. We are the taxpayers and voters who decide on governmental priorities.
This is a fight that is only going to get tougher. In every way, we all have to keep our guard up and not let it slip.
Our quality of life depends on it.
