A driver who crashed into Hannigan’s Hide-A-Ways on San Felipe Road had a seizure that caused him to accelerate into the mini-storage facility, police said.

Hollister resident Antonio Solis, 35, was pulling out of the McDonald’s drive-through around 10 a.m. Saturday, with his son in the passenger seat, when he suffered the attack, said Hollister Police Sgt. Carlos Reynoso.

While substantial damage was sustained to the building, no one was injured.

In a statement, Solis said he remembered his son coughing, and after he turned his head to see if he was OK, he blacked out and that was the last thing he remembered, Reynoso said.

“He tried to press the brake, but he pressed the accelerator instead,” Reynoso said. “He went straight across the intersection, through the center divider, and hit Hannigan’s Hide-A-Ways.”

No other cars or people were involved.

After his car crashed into the office of the facility, Solis was found sitting inside the car disorientated. He wasn’t sure how he had gotten there, police said.

Physician-prescribed medication to prevent seizures was also found in the vehicle, Reynoso said.

“Everybody believed he had a seizure,” he said. “He wasn’t complaining of any pain, but he was taken to the hospital.”

Whether Solis will lose his driver’s license is unknown, Reynoso said. The police will submit a form requiring him to be re-tested, but the decision is ultimately up to the state.
