The San Benito County Chamber of Commerce is recommending a “no” vote on Measure G.
The measure will be on the March 2 ballot. The 15-member Board of Directors supported publicly stating its opposition to the implications of Measure G at its monthly Board meeting Feb. 2.
“There was a consensus among the Board about the negative impact on the business community,” said Katherine Vais, president of the Board. “The Chamber is the voice for the business community.”
The Chamber is organized to create, promote and celebrate economic vitality within the county. For this reason, the Board decided to recommend county voters vote no on the measure.
The groups for and against the measure spoke with the Board early last year, Vais said. The Board decided to poll the Chamber’s 500 members to see how involved they wanted the Chamber to be in the debate. One-fourth of members responded with more than 80 percent supporting Chamber involvement, Vais said.
The Board discussed the issue and went on record as a Board against Measure G.
“We considered the timing (close to elections). We decided we needed to stand up at this time,” Vais said.
Measure G would change zoning to restrict subdivision of ag lands, create a program that would promote development near Hollister and leave voters responsible for changing laws related to development. The measure needs a majority to pass.
