The San Benito golf team finished in fourth place among the six teams represented in the Tri-County Athletic League golf meet at Salinas Country Club on Monday.

Salinas came in first with a 194. The Cowboys also had the medalists who tied with scores of 36 – Sam Campbell and Jason Simonetti.

In second place was Palma with a 198, Gilroy was third with a 212, San Benito was fourth with a 225, North Salinas was in fifth place with a 237 and Live Oak finished sixth with a 239.

Wesley Hanson was filling in for Zach Zgragen, who wasn’t able to make the meet because of sickness. Hanson turned in his own No. 1 performance with a 42 to lead the Balers. But a triple bogey 7 cost him a chance to lower his score.

“We’re learning how to score when we’re not hitting the ball,” said coach Mark Tinder. “When we miss the green, we need to learn how to chip and one-putt. We’re still learning how to save strokes. Every tournament they get a little more experience.”

Chris Shackleton and Jason Allen finished second with 44s. Daniel Isaacson had a 47, Chase Graves had a 48 and Patrick Fancher had a 57.

Both Isaacson and Francher were playing in their first varsity competition.

“We’re a young team, and we are still learning to keep it to a battle for a bogey,” Tinder said. “It seems like our team does well for three or four holes until they get to a big number. I attribute that a little to inexperience.”

San Benito will be competing against Gilroy and Live Oak at Ridgemark on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
