Community Pantry distribution: The Community Pantry will be distributing USDA commodities to low-income Hollister residents on Monday, April 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sunnyslope Christian Center. The distribution is only for Hollister area residents who meet federal income eligibility requirements. Recipients must provide identification that verifies their home address. Driver Safety Program: The AARP Driver Safety Program is hosting a refresher classroom course from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, April 12 and 13, at the Hollister Elks Lodge, 1436 351 Astro Drive. Graduates of the eight-hour course receive a certificate which entitles them to a reduction in their California auto insurance for the next three years, if they are 55 and senior. The tuition is $10. Occupational Outlook report: The 2003 California Monterey Bay Region (San Benito, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties) Occupational Outlook Report will be distributed to the local community at a dissemination meeting on Tuesday, April 13. The San Benito County Workforce investment Board invites persons to attend the presentation at 2:15 p.m. at the Community Services and Workforce Development Department, 1131 San Felipe Road.

BLM workshop: The Bureau of Land Management has scheduled a workshop on Wednesday, April 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hollister Field Office, 20 Hamilton Court, to discuss the fiscal year 2005 off-highway vehicle grant proposal for the Clear Creek Management Area. The grant provides funds for costs directly related to planning, managing and coordinating the OHV program in the Clear Creek Management Area. Diabetes series: Hazel Hawkins Community Health Clinic in San Juan Bautista is offering a free community education series on diabetes. Preschool: The Hollister Methodist United Church Preschool will be holding registration for the 2004-05 school year on Thursday, April 15, for returning and waiting list students beginning at 8 a.m. Alumni families (families who have attended the school before) will begin registering at noon. New families to the school will register on Friday, April 16, beginning at 8 a.m. Registration is done on a first come, first serve basis. Classes are offered for children 3 to 5 years of age. ‘Return to Glory’: Hollister Airmen’s Association invites all aviation enthusiasts to attend a fun and informal evening on Thursday, April 15, at Straw Hat Pizza, 191 A San Felipe Road. Dinner will be at 5:30 p.m. and a speaker and program will begin at 6:45. Speaker Bill Dietzel will share a video and tell the story of a B-29 saved from China Lake Naval Weapons Center. Dietzel towed the 148-foot wingspanned aircraft 38 miles across the Mojave Desert in four days. Each person is responsible for their own menu selection and check. Farmer’s market applications: The Hollister Downtown Association is now accepting applications from local San Benito County residents for the Farmer’s Market. This year the market will be held in a new location on the grassy lot at Fourth and San Benito streets on Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. Farmers must be certified through the county ag commissioner. Limited space is available and applications will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. After May 3, applications will be accepted from out-of-county vendors, if space is available. Miss San Benito Rodeo: Applications for the Miss San Benito Rodeo Contest are available at the Bolado Park Office, Ranchers’ Feed, Chamber of Commerce and McAbee Feed. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, April 30. For more details, call the office at (831) 628-3545.

Volunteer caregivers needed: Volunteer caregivers are needed for Tara Home, a project of Land of Medicine Buddha in Soquel. Tara Home is a residence for terminally ill individuals who do not have family members to take care of them or are unable to remain in their own home. Around-the-clock care is provided by trained volunteers, drawn from the community at large, who can offer four to eight hours a week of service. Applications are being accepted for the next volunteer caregiver training on Saturdays, April 24 and May 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. No experience is needed. Education Fund: Members of the community are being asked for tax deductible donations to help support the Connie O’Connor Education Fund. Since her untimely death in 1996, Connie’s family has helped keep her spirit and love for teaching alive by raising money for schools in Hollister. Connie attended Sacred Heart School and San Benito High School, and after finishing college, came back to her community and taught second and third grade at Sunnyslope Elementary. Since her death in 1996, more than $20,000 has been raised for school supplies in Hollister. Raffle tickets can be purchased at Boutique de Lingerie, Hain Cottage, Fast Travel, Enterprise Electric, Mi Casa Taqueria and Blue Ribbon Carpets. Community Pantry: Volunteers wanted for data entry and drivers. Data entry volunteers are needed at the Community Pantry office and can choose your schedule, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drivers are needed to pick up bread at local stores on Monday and/or Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to about 10:30 a.m., and on Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. They are needed to pick up tortillas in Watsonville on Mondays and Saturdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Interested individuals should call the Community Pantry, located at 30 Airport Drive, at 637-0340.
